This is quite an old song. I wrote this sometime around 2009 or 2010 while I was in college. It initially was written about a person I met who would ride the rails across the country. I had once fantasized about what kinds of adventures he was experiencing and how cool it would be to be so carefree and wild. The other side of his disappearances was that he left a family behind, sometimes years at a time, and what strife he was causing them. I also didn't think about the hardships of traveling without any security, financially or physically, while train-hopping. As a gigging musician I also found myself "drifting" from city to city, town to town, looking for the next gig and opportunity, having a storied life you could say, but at the same time always thinking about the life and relationships that may be passing me by. It had been a number of years since I had released any material and was having a hard time figuring out where to begin. "The Drifter" was the best choice: it was a song that many people could relate to, and a past that I had begun to finally heal from. I hope this song blesses you.
