I find scratching names or initials into trees or rocks an odd practice. I suppose we like to affix something that acts as a symbol of our presence to something we view as being more permanent or strong that ourselves and our fleeting existence. However just because we view something as fixed or strong doesn't mean it can't be hurt, damaged or destroyed. One particular instance I found a tree in the park that was oozing sap from a recently cut name into bark; the tree was literally bleeding from this person carving his name into its skin. It brings a good question of, "how do we treat the people and things around us, and what kind of impression or impact are we leaving behind?"
